Self-Care. Expectations VS Reality.

Expectations V.S. Reality of Self-Care

by cocoshore November 25, 2020
written by cocoshore

The expectations V.S. reality of self-care has become a bigger issue since people are posting ‘their’ self-care. Why does there need to be expectations on self-care when self-care is a personal and individual thing.

The expectation of self-care is that it is bubble baths and face mask, which can be self-care for some, but it does not have to be. With these images and expectations the notion of self-care is being portrayed as self-indulgence. Self-care is not always indulgent nor easy.

You can plan to have this ‘perfect’ self-care plan, but forget to account for the external factors that might stop you. Then this can cause stress and we then forget to take time for self-care. We do not need the perfect self-care plan, just time in each day to take a break to be able to refocus. We all like to think that we have the perfect, well rounded self-care routine, but then we struggle to make the time to better care for ourselves.

Why do we even have this notion of expectations V.S. reality of self-care. It just puts more pressure on people and makes them feel like they are not good enough. With images being shared on social media creates expectations of self-care, thus it makes it seem like self-care is only for certain people.

When you remember the aspect of social media, expectations and reality is still present. But it is an internal issue, by putting pressure on ourselves to achieve everything in one day. We need to remember to bring our expectations back to what is realistic, reality of what is achievable. We need to break this cycle, and remember that we can only do our best. And that we DO NEED TO TAKE CARE OF OURSELVES.

Remember that self-care is simply caring for yourself. Does not need to be fancy or expensive, just effective. Remember to make time to care for yourselves. Forget about the social media expectations and stop placing unrealistic expectations on ourselves.

What is NOT Self-Care

by cocoshore October 16, 2020
written by cocoshore

Self-care is NOT selfish. Remember that you can not pour from an empty cup or serve from an empty bowl. Self-care should not take from you, it is meant to refuel you. We all need self-care to be able to give our best selves and be our best.

Self-care is NOT trying to fix yourself it is about taking CARE of yourself. Self-care is NOT a guilty pleasure, rather an important aspect of ones overall well-being.

Remember there are many different forms of self-care. Self-care is not one size fits all, it is individual. Self-care does NOT need to be fancy, just needs to be effective. Self-care should not be expensive to be effective.

Everyone NEEDS self-care. Some might need it more often then others. But we all need self-care to be our best selves. Self-care is NOT a one size fits all, it needs to be personal for it to effective and beneficial.

There is no wrong way to practice self-care. Don’t worry what everyone else is doing for self-care, it is about not worrying about the social pressure but rather what works for you. Self-care is not about pleasing the people around you. Self-care is about you and what you NEED.

Self-care is not about pleasing the people around you. If self-care is bringing worry and other negative emotions, than it is not the right activity or time. Self-care should make you relaxed and more focused on what is around you. Self-care should not have a negative impact on your life. It is meant to improve your quality of life.

Something else to remember is that self-care is NOT a last resort it is a preventative measure. Self-care helps to counteract burnout. We all deserve time-out, time for ourselves.

Self-care is NOT selfish, it is essential to life!

R U Ok? DAY

R U OK? DAY.
Today is a reminder to ask EVERY DAY if someone is ok. Remember that asking if someone is ok, is just the start of the conversation. If you ask them you need to be ready to listen to what is on their mind.
Today is a reminder that not everyone is ok and that life has many ups and downs. I think we have all learnt that more than ever this year. It is important to check in on those that you care about.

Don’t be scared to ask, just start the conversation. But remember there is more to say after R U OK.

Everyday is R U OK, day. Today just brings it to everyones attention.

R U OK?’s vision is a world where we’re all connected and are protected from suicide.

R U OK?’s mission is to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with people around them and support anyone struggling with life.

R U OK?’s goals are to:

  1. Boost our confidence to meaningfully connect and ask about life’s ups and downs.
  2. Nurture our sense of responsibility to regularly connect and support others.
  3. Strengthen our sense of belonging because we know people are there for us. Be relevant, strong and dynamic

R U OK?

Sensory Self-Care Activities:

written by cocoshore

Sensory self-care has the aim of calming the mind and bring your awareness to the present and your surroundings. When looking at sensory self-care activities it is important to remember all senses, smell, touch, sight and sound. Often we are more responsive to a certain sense, what might this sense be for you. By targeting the sense that you respond best with, you will get the most reward from this area of self-care.

Some ideas for sensory self-care activities:

  • Cuddle up with a soft blanket.
  • Going for a walk in nature, taking in the fresh air.
  • Watching a candle burn or a fire.
  • Having a hot shower or bath and feel the water on your skin.
  • Focus on the movements of the breath.
  • Lay and listen to music, only focusing on the music.
  • Sitting in the sun, focusing on the warmth of the sun.
  • Watch the sun rise or set.
  • Just sit and watch the clouds.
  • Taking time out from the business environment.

written by cocoshore

Professional self-care is self-care that is related to your work life, and may mean that you need to practice self-care while at work. It is about creating a healthy work-life balance. This is a really important area of self-care that we might not even think about. We all need a work-life balance and not to get burnt out at work. Remember that work is only one part of your life.

Now lets look at some activities that focus on professional self-care:

  • Take short breaks, especially if you have a desk job.
  • DO NOT have your lunch at your desk. Take a step back. Enjoy your lunch break. Go to the lunch room, go outside.
  • Use your lunch break to reset your mind. Make it about you.
  • Leave your work at work. This can be hard for some people but it is important to not bring your work home with you. If you work at home have boundaries within your house of where work is complete.
  • Use your holiday leave. Your workplace will be able to survive without you. You will come back recharged and be able to give your best at work.
  • Learn to say NO. Do not take on more work than you can handle.
  • Form supportive relationships with co-workers.
  • Take a step back and acknowledge what you have achieved.
  • Set boundaries.
  • Do not work unpaid overtime.
  • Get regular supervision, have time to debrief with co-workers.
  • Make sure that your work environment is positive.
  • Continue to learn. Up skill.

Activities For Emotional Self-Care

by cocoshore May 3, 2020
written by cocoshore

As we defined the different types of self-care you would have noticed that there was mental and emotional self-care. Emotional Self-Care is about caring for your emotions. We will explore what that looks like here. Emotional self-care is about learning to stay with those feelings and humour the emotional before moving forward.

Release your emotions. Sometimes you just need to feel the emotions.

Acceptance of yourself as you are is so important.

Here are some ideas of what emotional self-care is:

  • Journaling: thoughts, feeling, emotions, events or brain dump. Journaling does not have to be writing.
  • Let the emotions out: cry, laugh, watch a funny movie.
  • Find a song that speaks to your current emotion.
  • Give yourself permission to feel your emotions. Even if they are painful. Do this without judgement or guilt.
  • Talking to someone. Share the load.
  • Meditation.
  • Learn to say no.
  • Learn to accept compliments without feeling awkward.
  • Learning to accept mistakes.
  • Acknowledge your emotions.
  • Learn HEALTHY copying skills.
  • Practicing gratitude.
  • Love yourself.
  • Praise yourself.
  • Positive affirmations.
  • Cuddle with your pet.

All emotions are essentially “energy in motion.” They are not good or bad. They are just energy.
